Pakistan look to turn tide by winning T20 series

KARACHI: World No. 1 Pakistan would be looking to end an otherwise disappointing tour of South Africa on a successful note by winning the three-match Twenty20 International series which gets underway in Cape Town from Friday (today).Today’s match will start at 09:00 pmThe Pakistanis, who were blanked 3-0 in the Test series, lost the five-match ODI contest 3-2. However, they have a good chance of winning the T20I series against the Proteas even in the absence of regular captain Sarfraz Ahmed, who is serving a four-match suspension. The South Africans will be looking to capitalise on the momentum after winning the ODI series decider on Wednesday.David Miller is back in the squad and South Africa will look to him, De Kock and captain Faf Du Plessis for some big hitting to match the tourists. The hosts are resting their experienced bowling attack which means that Dale Steyn, Rabada, Philander and Tahir are all left out. They have called up talented youngster Lutho Sipamla and the likes of Beuren Hendricks, Junior Dala and Tabraiz Shamsi, who are all expected to play.Pakistan come into the T20I series as the top-ranked team in the world in this format of the game and having won 17 of their last 18 T20 international matches so confidence is superb despite having lost the Test and ODI series. The team will not be too dissimilar to that which ended the ODI series although Pakistan will be skippered by Shoaib Malik and they may consider rejigging the batting order with the in-form Imad Wasim potentially coming up the order for some pinch-hitting.Hussain Talat is one candidate to come into the side as he offers another part-time bowling option with Mohammad Amir possibly making way, while Mohammad Rizwan is under some pressure to perform and take advantage of this opportunity in Sarfraz’s absence.South Africa edged the ODI series with a comfortable win in the final match but the series went back and forth with both teams having their moments. Pakistan will not be too disillusioned by that loss and they enter this format of the game where they have been the standout team in the international scene for the last 12 months. Despite losing the ODI series, they did have the ability to hit bigger than the hosts, and they can get off to a good start with a win in the series opener. —with inputs from agencies

An exciting social media 'Biryani vs Pulao' debate

A very interesting debate online had caused Twitterati bigwigs to come together to answer one burning question that has been trending as one of the most viral hashtags over the last couple of days: What's better, Biryani or Pulao? While some opted for the Biryani with its perfect blend of spices, others chose Pulao for its modest offering of flavours. Some even likened the two to one of the rivalries that remain eternal; such as India vs Pakistan, Karachi vs Lahore and Tea vs Coffee. Although it's difficult to ascertain as to who and what triggered the amusing #BiryanivsPulao debate, it sure had caused netizens to weigh in on what they think is the winner in this brutal face-off. While they were proponents of both the dishes  picking their side, Biryani won the poll with a narrow margin. Moreover, on Thursday, it was announced by the Sindh Governor House that it will host an international Biryani Festival every year. The announcement was made by Sindh Governor Imran Ismail  at a lunch gathering organised by the Rice Exporters Association of Pakistan (REAP).

Asia Bibi still in Pakistan, but free to go: foreign office

ISLAMABAD: Asia Bibi, the Christian woman whose acquittal was upheld this week in a blasphemy saga which has made her a prime target for vigilantes, is still in Pakistan, the foreign ministry said Thursday. As Islamist extremists announced fresh protests demanding her execution, officials said she was free to go abroad, with speculation rampant that she will seek asylum in Europe or North America.Bibi, a labourer from central Punjab province, was convicted of blasphemy in 2010 and was on death row until her acquittal last year.Since her acquittal she has been in protective custody, with authorities refusing to reveal her whereabouts out of fear for her safety. On Tuesday the Supreme Court cleared the final legal hurdle in her case, throwing out a petition seeking an appeal against her acquittal. The decision spurred calls for protests from extremists who have demanded Bibi´s hanging, and set the stage for her to leave the country. Her daughters are believed to have already fled to Canada."To the best of my knowledge, Asia Bibi is still in Pakistan," foreign ministry spokesman Mohammad Faisal told reporters in Islamabad during a weekly press briefing."She is a free citizen. If she wants to live in Pakistan, she can live in Pakistan. If she wants to go abroad she can go. This is her wish and there is no restriction on her," he continued.

Painting the striking hues of femininity in a colourless Thar

Moazzam Ali is a contemporary artist known for his contributions in the art locally and internationally. His mastery of the watercolour medium and his dexterity in handling the technique draws attention of art lovers worldwide. His current solo exhibition at Artciti Gallery, Karachi was a treat for watercolour fans.He has chosen the transparent watercolour technique for his expressions, and uses other elements such as textures, lines, shapes and light to maintain the transparency of the medium. His compositions show vividness, rhythm, veracity and design of its own. In his nearly four-decade career, Moazzam Ali developed his expertise in this field by travelling around the world to study and research. He is a painter who created his own unique, distinctive painting style influenced by the ‘Thar Desert’. He successfully presents relationship between culture and life experiences. The series of figures show sequences echoing stories. His paintings reflect his artistic expressions in a variety of emotions, representations and themes that are explored during the lifetime of a woman. His rendering of figures is different as he mainly portrayed the feminine form using shades of bright colours against dull background to glamorize the simplicity of human anatomy against a colourless life in Thar. His paintings reflect traditional features and attractive dresses of Thari women, which is thousands of year’s old unique heritage of Indus Civilization. A Thari woman with a pitcher is one of his signature works. His paintings reveal poetical renditions of women images focusing on local women’s daily life in vibrant hues. While going through his paintings over the period of time I observed that Moazzam Ali speaks through the eyes of women he paints. The flat face women without any expressions gaze at the viewer as if trying to say something. These women speaks another language – a language of silence which is being heard loudly by the viewers around the globe wherever the paintings were exhibited. The almond eyes are always thinking. These thoughts are of past, present and future thus she has a keen eye on every aspect of life but do not express her thoughts openly. Moazzam brings out what is in the heart of these women as they have confined themselves inside unseen boundaries and he helped them cross those boundaries; silently narrating their stories of the past and present through paintings hoping for better future ahead. He excelled in the medium of watercolour painting and created a bond with the heritage in his own different way. He visited different parts of Sindh like Thatta, Makli and Chawkandi from where he also got his inspiration. The drapery and jewels in his paintings are colourful have various bright colours like orange, yellow, chrome yellow, golden, bright red just like the drapery and jewels found in the desert region. By using all these vibrant colours he gives a realistic touch to his paintings. But he often leaves half the picture plain unpainted adding the feeling of freedom and spontaneity. Thousands of years have passed by and still their history is alive making it one of the strongest civilizations in the world making people around the world keen and inspired many like Moazzam Ali.‘Women of Thar’ is a constant theme, which persists throughout his painting career. He has produced a number of paintings on this theme but he also ventured on other women subjects and sometimes do landscapes paintings to take a break.

Daughters of Asia Bibi in Canada: source

OTTAWA: The daughters of Pakistani Christian woman Asia Bibi, whose blasphemy case spotlighted religious extremism in her country, are now in Canada, a source close to the case said Wednesday.Unconfirmed Pakistani reports earlier claimed the children had already fled to Canada, and speculation was rampant that she would seek asylum in North America or Europe.Canadian officials reached by AFP would not confirm the source’s information.Bibi, a laborer from central Punjab province, was convicted of blasphemy in 2010 and was on death row until her acquittal last year which prompted days of violent demonstrations.Under a deal with protesters to end the violence, the government allowed a petition demanding an appeal against the acquittal. But Chief Justice Asif Saeed Khosa on Tuesday threw out the petition, lifting the last legal hurdle in the case and paving the way for her to leave the country. After the ruling, Bibi’s lawyer Saif-ul-Mulook hinted that his client’s move could be imminent."I think at this time she is here (in Pakistan) -- but by tonight, I don’t know," he told reporters outside the court.Extremists "said they would kill her despite the judgment of the Supreme Court," he said. "Therefore, I think she should leave the country."But the call by religious hardliners for protests fell flat on Wednesday, when fewer than 30 demonstrated in two cities.Bibi has been in protective custody and the government of Pakistan refused to reveal her whereabouts for fear of her being targeted by vigilantes. In a statement, Canada’s foreign ministry said Bibi’s case "is a priority for our government, and we are focused on ensuring the safety of her and her family."It added that "we are working with like-minded friends and allies on this issue. Canada is prepared to do everything we can to ensure the safety of Asia Bibi."In November Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Ottawa was holding talks with Pakistan about bringing her to Canada, which he said is "a welcoming country."
