KARACHI: Habib University (HU) celebrated high-achieving students at the 6th Annual Meritorious Awards Ceremony held at the university’s campus on Thursday.Brilliant students drawn from schools across Karachi attended the grand ceremony along with their parents. These high-achieving students were acknowledged for their passion and dedication towards learning and self-improvement. The ceremony was led by students, faculty and staff of Habib University who interacted with the high-achievers and their parents attending the event.They shared their views on the importance of a quality higher education and its role in the uplift of society. HU alumni and graduates from Habib University’s first cohort, the Class of 2018, Zoha Jabbarand Osama bin Rizwan, also addressed the audience to share their experience at Habib University, their current professional undertakings and future aspirations. The City School, Beaconhouse School System, Nixor College and Cedar College were among the institutions whose students were acknowledged at the Meritorious Awards Ceremony.Leading representatives and faculty members of Habib University dwelled upon the importance of quality higher education and its role in transforming societies. Subsidizing Hajj against its basic philosophy: Fawad

ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Chaudhry Fawad Hussain on Friday said that giving subsidy to Hajj was against the basic philosophy of Hajj.In a tweet, he said that Hajj and Zakat were obligatory for those Muslims who could afford them.He said that giving subsidy to Hajj would mean spending poor tax payers money on Hajj expenses, obligatory only for those who could afford.The minister was apparently responding to the criticism over the government’s refusal to subsidise this year’s Hajj.

Police to investigate payment of ransom for Dr Ibraheem Khalil's release

QUETTA: Investigation would be carried out into release from abduction of Neurosurgeon Ibrahim Khail after payment of ransom of Rs50 million, Deputy Inspector General Police Quetta Abdul Razaq Cheema said on Friday.Speaking to the media, he said the police would record statement of Dr Ibraheem Khalil about his kidnapping and release and take action against the elements involved in his kidnapping.Also read:   Abducted Quetta doctor returns home after paying Rs50 million ransomDr Khalil, a doctor at Quetta Civil Hospital, was kidnapped from Shehbaz Twon on December 13.On January 30, Khalil returned home, with a doctors' body claiming that he was released after payment of ransom of up to Rs50 million.Dr Zahir Mandokhel, Chairman of Doctors's Action Committee, had told media that the government had no role in Khalil's release from abduction.He said The surgeon was released in Karachi from where he travelled to Quetta.On Thursday, the committee's General Body meeting called payment of ransom government's failure, demanding that the family be compensated for the financial loss.The meeting also called for arrest of the kidnappers and stringent security measures for protection of doctors.

Pakistan look to turn tide by winning T20 series
